6. George JACKSON, son of William JACKSON and Susannah DEAN, was born on 5 January 1758 in Gainsborough. He was baptised on 17 January 1758 in Gainsborough. He married Mary HOWARD on 1 October 1796 in Fort William, Calcutta, India. He died of Died of a Fit on 20 April 1823 in North Reston, Lincolnshire.

Robert Darlington writes that, based on information from the Diary of Mary HOWARD, George ran away to sea when he was 14 years old. As the youngest in the family and living not too far away from a seaport, that is probably exactly what happened. Ships at that time frequently sailed to China and India where they traded in many goods including tea and porcelain. So it is not surprising that George was next found in India.

He must have been an enterprising sailor to have become a Master (Captain). the Diary shows him with the intiials H.E.I.C. which stands for Honorable East India Company. When Robert and his wife Wendy visited the Jackson home in North Reston in the early 1990s they spoke to the then owner of George Jackson's original estate. He was a busy farmer in the midst of harvest so they did not get to see the inside of the house or discuss the ownership with him. But his one remark after they had identified their connection with George Jackson was to say words to the effect that "Oh yes, didn't he make his money trading in opium or slaves".

David Morris notes that he was referred to as "A Captain in the Country Service" which he has found reference to as the boss of a Trading Post managed for the East India Company. A reference www.barnettmaritime.co.uk/mainheic.htm gives some historical information on the H.E.I.C..

From the records in FMP India section BMD's and in the diary it appears that George had two illegitimate sons before he married Mary on the 1st October 1796. We can follow the fact that the first son George was registered as born 9 Dec 1795 and died 5 Feb 1798. The Diary and the Bmd's differ in respect of the second son - James Lewis JACKSON. The diary says born September 1799 but registration gives the birth as 29 Dec 1799. The Diary states that "James Lewis JACKSON left us 22nd May 1814" but then goes on to say that "James JACKSON died the 17th April 1825 on a Sunday". FMP provides the answer with a copy of the will of James Lewis JACKSON dated 1825. He had obviously visited his "Mother" in 1814.

As Robert states, had all this happened in England it is doubtful that the mores of the gentry would have permitted Mary Howard to marry George Jackson as she was obviously well connected in Calcutta society.

Mary HOWARD, daughter of William HOWARD (1749-1795) and Elizabeth (Betsey) METFORD (1748-1825), was born on 28 December 1780 in Calcutta, India. In 1829 she was resident in North Reston. Information from Petition of son John to join the HEIC as an Assistant Surgeon. Mary appeared in the census in 1841 in St George the Martyr, Middlesex. The address was: Dover Place. Living with daughter Caroline in home of sister Catherine. Mary appeared in the census in 1851 in Kensington, London. The address was: 8 Lansdown Road. Proved by Rev George JACKSON & Howard JACKSON, both of North Reston.

As Robert Darlington writes in his history of Jackson of Lincolnshire and India that Mary wrote a diary which provided many of the names, dates of births, deaths and mariages of her family and relatives. Mary married George Jackson in 1896 when she was not quite 16 years old. Her diary survived her life in India and her return to England. David MORRIS a cousin of Wendy - Robert's wife inherited the diary and much of the documentation from his Mother on her death in 1992. He shared that with Robert and another descendant - Nikki Vine of Somerset.

He was there until his father moved to South Reston in 1874 where his father was the Rector of St Edith the small church adjacent to the home of the local land owner Howard Jackson. It is here that we find the closer relationship between the family of Albert and the Jackson's (mentioned in the notes related to Albert) in that the youngest child of Howard Jackson was Susan Rose Jackson, born in 1865 whom Francis married on the 18th June 1891.

Francis was intended for the clergy and was a student at Cuddeston Theological College when his father died in 1885. This required him to leave college before being ordained. He found work with The Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen which later became the Royal National Mission. he remained with this organisation until 1922 having been appointed its Secretary many years earlier.

The Superintendant of the Mission was Wilfred Grenfell (later Sir Wilfred, an energetic and charismatic man whose biography was written by J Lennox Kerr and published by the Ryerson Press, Toronto in 1959. In spite of all his positive attributes Grenfell was extremely disorganised with the business affairs of the Mission and this was to cause difficulties between Francis and his superior.

Francis undertook complex and difficult tasks on behalf of the Mission. On two occasions he was involved in the purchase of reindeer in Lappland and their transport to Labrador. once in 1907 for the Mission and again in 1921 for the Hudson Bay Company on secondment.

Francis had not forgotten his childhood friend Susan Rose Jackson and they married on 18th June 1891.

When he retired they lived for a while in Clevedon on the Somerset coast. In 1920 they built a thatched house called Little Picket in an old orchard in Cookham Dean, Berkshire. It is adjacent to the village church where Francis and Susan Rose are buried.

During his retirement Francis was busy with local affairs. he was a member of the Cookham Rural District Council, a Churchwarden, and a manager of the village Church of England School.

Spouse: Victor Octave Xavier Alfred de Morton DE LA CHAPELLE, Victor Octave la Chapelle Oxford May 2015

139. Mary Evelyn Howard (Nona) PADDISON, daughter of Howard PADDISON and Mary Anne JEPSON, was born on 24 December 1865 in Hampton. She appeared in the census in 1871 in Hampton. The address was: Thames Street. Living with parents. Mary appeared in the census in 1881 in Hampton. The address was: Riverdale, Thames Street. Living with parents. Mary married Victor Octave Xavier Alfred de Morton DE LA CHAPELLE on 23 February 1887 in Hampton. She appeared in the census in 1901 in Fulham. The address was: 65 Gunderstone Road. Living with her aunt Sophia FRASER (65) B. Louth Lincoln - widow. Mary died on 1 April 1950 in Sutton, Surrey. The address was: 9 St James Avenue. Died at St Heliers Hospital Carshalton. Probate to Alan William BROWN, Solicitor. Estate value 3057 pounds.

Mary married Count Victor Octave...who studied with her father Howard and became a well known figure in social and legal circles. Octavia and Mary had one daughter Aline who eloped and married an Argentinian immigrant worker while already pregnant with his child, fled to Argentina with him to run a cattle ranch, was widowed only a few years later. Mary had to travel to Argentina to bring Aline and her two young children back to England and raised them herself. By this time Mary was separated from the Count - he formed a relationship with Rachel and went to live in Essex. He shot himself in his office in the City of London.

Victor Octave Xavier Alfred de Morton DE LA CHAPELLE, son of Jean Joseph Xavier Alfred de MORTON le Comte DE LA CHAPELLE (1830-1914) and Kate ROYAL (1844-1878), was born on 17 September 1863 in St Kilda, Melbourne, AUSTRALIA. He appeared in the census in 1891 in St Pancras. The address was: Gower Street. Living with wife Mary. Victor appeared in the census in 1911 in Golders Green, London NW11. Octave is described as Ernests Brother in Law, Rachel de la CHAPELLE (35) b 22 Apr 1875 in London Died Mar 1970 in Hampstead and, described as a Cousin. Also in residence was Yvonne DE LA CHAPELLE aged 4 described as a Niece. Census also states that he had been married for 5 years (1906) and had one child. In 1927 Victor was resident in London EC2. The address was: 36 Gresham Street. In residence with Rachel DE LA CHAPELLE. Question is why - where was Mary who died in 1950? Victor was a Legal Profession - Solicitor. He died on 9 June 1931 in London. The address was: 34 & 36 Gresham Street. He was buried in June 1931 in Tollesbury Cemetery. The address was: Maldon, Essex.

An interesting reference to the life and family of Victor can be found at http://outoftheinkbottle.blogspot.fr/2010/02/alfred-comte-de-la-chapelle.html. and possibly from the family tree of Jean Hervé FABRE on google search.

There is another story regarding Victor published by the Oxford DNB and I believe that it provide an insight into Victor's life in England when he returned from Australia with his parents. The story indicates that he had a mistress and an illegitimate child and that could possibly be Rachel. Whilst the 1911 census shows him living with Rachel and his daughter Yvonne and were supposed to have married in 1904 there does not appear to be a record of that marriage or of the birth of Yvonne. We do have a record of Victors marriage to Mary PADDISON and she was living with him in 1891 but not in 1901 or 1911.

Sailed on SS Montcalm with wife and daughter Pamela from fathers home - West Pentire, Clevedon; Somerset arriving Quebec as above to stay with friend Mr P BUTLER. Eric died on 5 February 1971 in Victoria B.C., Canada.

Robert Darlington reports that Eric had a great fascination with things mechanical. His brother had trained in medicine and perhaps he disappointed the family by not engaging in a field that was more genteel.

At the age of 11 he was also sent to the boarding school called Mostyn House in Cheshire which was run by the brother of Sir Wilfred Grenfell. At the age of 14 he transferred to The City of London Boys School on the Thames Embankment. Later his training at an engineering company was ended when World War 1 broke out. Eric could have stayed with this reserved occupation but early in 1915 he joined tthe Royal Army Service Corps as a dispatch driver and ammunition truck driver, for the remainder of the war.

The sapphire mine in Montana had done well for a period during the war but by 1919 it was faltering and the family were not successful in selling it. Eric was offered the job of supervising its machinery and he spent four years doing that. The link between Eric and the Sapphire mine was through his wife's sister Mary Louise Howard JACKSON who married Edward Augustus Keller in 1877. His father was a jeweller and had invested in the mine. Information on the mine can be found at www.gemgallery.com/#yogo_sapphire_history and www.russellcountry.com/Yogo_sapphires.html but no mention of Eric or Keller can be found. When he decided to return to England he took passage on SS MELITA where he met Lilian Mary Sharps. They soon became engaged.

Eric set up a taxi business in Clevedon in Somerset and that is where they married on 24 July 1925. Lilians family had gone to Vancouver Island and she had lived with them for a period after the war. Business in Clevedon was not so good so Lilian convinced Eric to emigrate. Their first daughter Pamela Angell Wood was born in Clevedon and in 1929 they moved to Victoria.

Eric worked in a number of jobs through the Depression but principally with the bus company where he was a machinist. They purchased some land and a modest home off Carey Road. When World War II broke out Eric's skills as a machinist gained him an NCO position in the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps. He worked at Signal Hill supervising the work on coast defence guns and other military equipment. By war's end he was a Warrant Officer and was awarded the British Empire Medal (MBE) for his services.

HM Dockyard was aware of his skills and they took him on to maintain and repair the gyroscopes in naval torpedoes. He then returned to Vancouver Island Coach Lines.

When he retired his love of machinery continued. He had a workshop in his back yard which was complete with a metal lathe and other equipment allowing him to construct model trains of exacting standards. In company with another "steam buff" who designed, and Eric built, working steam engines for small boats. Eric would take orders only from those with a true love of steam propulsion and at least one of his engines still appears at Victoria's annual classic boat show.

It was in lifting one of these engines that strained his heart and he died in 1973?

Eric and Babs had two daughters. Pamela Angell was born in Clevedon just before they emigrated. Pam married a widower Bruce Milburn and became mother to his two sons. A third son Kim was born after they married.

The second daughter, Wendy Howard was born in 1931 in Victoria and married Robert Darlington on the 5th April 1952.

Eric applied for admission as a Freeman of the City of London having recently served as a Private in the RASC in accordance with an Order of the Court of Common Council dated 20th May 1915. he was living at 30 Perryn Road Acton W3 the home of his Father at the time.
