John Alexander Reina Newlands was the son of a Scottish Presbytarian Minister and his Italian wife.He was home schooled and went on to study at the Royal College of Chemistry but he was also interested in social reform and in 1860 he served as a volunteer with Guiseppi Garibaldi in his campaign to unify Italy. Returning to London he set up in practice as an Analytical Chemist in 1864, and in 1868 became Chief Chemist in James Duncan's London sugar refinery. Later he left the company and again set up as an analyst with his brother Benjamin. Newlands was the first person to devise a periodic table of elements arranged in order of their relative atomic weights. See Wikipedia for further information on his life and career.
There is a Blue Plaque erected on the house in West Square, Newington, South London where Newlands was born
Jane Richings born 1837 in Stanford in the Vale Berkshire married John A R Newlands on 1st June 1862 in Marylebone, London. However in the census of 1871 John's wife is shown as Elizabeth born 1837 in Stanford and in the census of 1881 and 1891 his wife is shown as Emily born 1837 in Stanford. In 1901 she is known as Jane living with her son William in Streatham and also in 1911. There remains a mystery regarding this change of forename.
