There is a draft article of agreement, within the Lloyd Collection at the Cheshire Record Office, dated 5 March 1791 "between John Lloyd son of Ann Lloyd of Newport in the County of Salop, widow, and Holland Watson of Stockport in the County of Chester". Holland Watson was an Attorney in the Kings Bench at Westminster and the agreement relates to him taking on John Lloyd as an articled Clerk.
The Manchester Times of 8th January 1842 reported that John Lloyd had resigned from the post of Clerk to the Assize and Lord Abinger, in whom the patronage lay, had appointed Edward Watson Lloyd to succeed him.
There is much speculation regarding the parentage of John. Despite extensive searches it has not been established who the Father of John was. Marjorie COSENS has provided anecdotal "evidence" that John's Mother was the governess in the household of the Earls Fitzwilliam, and had a fling with the young 4th Earl (1748-1833). The resulting birth registration of John naturally did not record the paternity. His grandaughter Louise Mary NAPIER née LLOYD is said to have researched the family tree much later and discovered some evidence of the illegitimacy which she pruriently destroyed.
