Although it was almost certainly made in 1755 it required an Indenture in 1864 which named his descendants down to great great grandchildren. He left the property described as "two messuages or tenements with lands and appertenances thereto belonging.......lying in the parish of Chartham" in trust for his wife with succession to his two children and their descendants. 17. Thomas WOOD, son of Simon WOOD and Margaret SHRUBSOLE, was born on 16 September 1759 in Chartham. He was a Cordwainer. He experienced Apprenticeship on 15 June 1775 in St Alphage, Canterbury Kent aged 16. Entered into Apprenticeship with William Monrow in St Alphege, Canterbury as a Cordwainer for 7 years. Thomas married Frances (Françoise) THORELL on 2 September 1784 in St Alphege Church, Canterbury. He died on 8 May 1809 in St Margarets , Canterbury Kent aged 50.

Apprenticed to William Monrow, in St Alphege, Canterbury Cordwainer for 7 years on 19 jun 1775. ( William Monrow died 6th June 1786 aged 68). Thomas set up in business at the end of his apprenticeship in 1782 when he was also entered as a Freeman of the City of Canterbury, by apprenticeship. It has been assumed that this was in 19 St Margarets Street . This certainly became the family home and shoemaking business until 1903 but I do not believe the business was transferred there until about 1800. My suspicions were first aroused when I confirmed the birth of Thomas and Frances's children. Thomas and Frances were married in St Alphege church in 1784. Mary Frances and Thomas Henry were baptised in St Alphege Parish in 1786 and 1789 respectively. Charles John, Edwin William, George Parsons, Francis Elizabeth and Henry Samuel were all baptised in All Saints Parish. The latter in 1800. Research carried out on my behalf by Steve Thomas indicates from the Rate books that Thomas Wood did not start paying rates in St Margarets Street until 1801/1802. Although there was a William Wood paying rates in St Margarets Street before that time but I am not sure if there is a relationship. In respect of the birth of the children it is significant that George Frederick was baptised in 1806 in St Margarets Parish. It is suggested therefore that Thomas established a shoemaking business in St Alphege in 1782, then transferred to All Saints around 1790 and finally moved into the larger premises at 19 St Margarets Street in 1801/02 where the business remained until 1903 when my Grandfather Edgar Lancefield closed it down and moved to Dover.
It is believed that our family were descended from the Huguenot refugees and this belief was reinforced when Dudley Wood came into contact with Robert Darlington - whose wife Wendy was a descendant of Albert Wood - and David Morris, great great grandson of Albert. Research by Dudley and that of several professional researchers almost certainly comes to the conclusion that the French connection comes through Frances Thorel, wife of Thomas Wood, the first Cordwainer in the family. Thorel being a well established name in the Picardy region of Northern France and noted for the Huguenots. She being the Great (x3)Grandmother of Wendy, David and Dudley.

Frances (Françoise) THORELL, daughter of Jean (John) THORELL (1733-1808) and Françoise (Frances) CHARTIER (1729-1796), was born on 14 February 1763 in St Alphage. The trusts included a sum of 100 pounds to Charlotte Wills spinster and orphan of Chilham and then further trusts to his nephews Thomas Henry, George Frederick, Henry Samuel, Thomas (son of John Wood), Charles son of his late nephew Charles John Wood, His nieces Francis(wife of James Linton), niece Mary Ann ?Foy - widow, his niece ?Sarah, wife of Stephen Ware(d) and Maria Bundock spinster who was residing with him at the time of his will. This allowed Eliza and Fanny to live out their lives as annuitants as they did not marry.

From the history produced by Robert Darlington we find that Edwin William first served in the Royal Navy. It is not known for how long and in what capacity. He was then given an appointment in the Commisariat. Robert was not acquainted with the status and duties of this organization but felt that it was part of the Civil Service or Foreign Office. After his marriage to Emma Minter (described as a minor they were posted to France where they set up house in Calais. They were very shortly recalled to England and sent to Mauritius. Edwin's health declined after a few months and they were repatriated to England. He died as a result of his illness in 1820 at the age of 27.

She wrote a memoir dated 15 March 1824 giving a detailed and moving account of her life with Edwin. It includes descriptions of several near disasters at sea, of fires and hurricanes in Mauritius and the experience of looking after her terminally ill husband in such conditions. Appointed as one of the Overseers (there were usually two appointted) for All Saints Ward for 1851/52. Information published in Kentish Gazette 15 Apr 1851. In 1771 an Act of Parliament allowed the city parishes to be rated as a whole. From 1728 to 1850 the workhouse for all city parishes was the Poor Priests Hospital in Stour Street, St Margarets Parish Canterbury; now the museum of Canterbury and situated opposite 19 Margaret Street. 1850/51 was the time when the poor of Canterbury parishes were moved from the city centre to the suburbs and the large Victorian Workhouse in Nunnery Fields, St Mary Bredin Parish. That building had only been started in the autumn of 1849 and was to house 400 poor from all of the parishes in the City and Borough of Canterbury.
George Frederick would have held a book which showed the rate to collect and from whom and those who received aid from the parish.

Albert (Athelstane) WOOD, Albert Wood - Crockfords 3

48. Albert (Athelstane) WOOD, son of Thomas Henry WOOD and Elizabeth MAXFIELD, was born on 3 January 1831 in St Margarets. He was baptised on 30 March 1831 in St Margarets. He was a Clergyman - Vicar. He appeared in the census in 1841 in St Margarets aged 10. He appeared in the census in 1851 in St Margarets aged 20. Employed as Drapers Assistant. On 6 May 1862 Albert lived in Westminster, London. He married Ann (Laurie) Lomas ALLIOTT on 6 May 1862 in St Georges, Hanover Square, London. He appeared in the census in 1871 in Castlemorton, Worcestershire aged 39. He appeared in the census in 1881 in South Reston, Lincolnshire aged 50. Living with wife Ann and Children Winifred, Harold, Dagmar, Jessica and Lionel. Albert died on 14 October 1885 in City of Lincoln. He made a will on 18 February 1886 in North Somercotes, Lincoln aged 54. Gross value of his estate was £1694-14s-6p. Albert made a will on 18 February 1886 in Principal Registry. Probate granted on 18 Feb 1886. Rev Albert Wood of South Reston Rectory but late of North Somercotes Vicarage was proved by Ann Lomas Wood of Frobell House in Walkergate Louth, Lincs.

From information supplied by Robert Darlington and David Morris we know that Albert was apparently given just one forename at birth but he seems to have adopted a second forename "Athelstane". He was born in Canterbury on 3rd January 1831. He was a student at Oxford but for medical reasons he was advised to move to a warmer climate. As a result he finished his degree at the University of Cape Town in 1855. He was ordained as a Deacon by the Bishop of Cape Town on the 23rd December 1855.
He remained in that area for a period during which he served as Assistant Curate of St Georges Cathedral, Capetown. On 18th December 1859 he was ordained as a priest by the Bishop of Cape Town. He then became Acting Chaplain of St John, Wynberg, Cape of Good Hope from 1859 to 1861. During that time in 1860 he received a testimonial letter for his job as Chaplain to the depot for military invalids.
He must have felt that his health had recovered because his next position was as Assistant Stipendiary Curate of St Mary's in Vincent Square, Westminster from 1861 to 1862. All of these appiointments are recorded in Crockfords Clerical Directory dated 1855.
Albert married Ann Lomas Alliott on 6th May 1862 in St Georges, Hanover Square. In some ways this is a strange connection. Ann was the daughter of Francis Simes Alliott of Nottingham. Her family were ministers of the Castle Gate Congregational Church in that city. The Alliott family hostory has been documented by Robert Darlington.
The newly weds left immediately for Albert's new appointment as Stipendiary Curate in the parish of Leigh with duties at St Paul's Westleigh, Lancashire. He was there for three years until 1865. It was at Leigh that the first of his six children was born.
In 1865 he again moved and this time became Curate at Castlemorton, part of the parish of Longdon in Worcestershire.
Alberts frequent moves and his continuing duties as Curate rather than as Vicar suggest a man who may not have been easy to manage. David Morris suggests that he may have been a difficult person to deal with. His energies have led him to run into problems with the higher management of the Church. While at Castlemorton he waged a successful campaign to recover money left for the relief of the poor of the parish. That money had been diverted to reduce the parish's poor rate and was therefore benefiting the ratepayers and not the poor. When a new Vicar arrived at Longdon there were differences of opinion between him and Albert which caused Albert to leave the parish for a new appointment.
The next four children of Albert and Ann were born during the nine years that they stayed at Castlemorton.
In 1874 Albert became the Rector of South Reston, Lincolnshire. Duties as Curate of North Reston were added in 1878. The "living" at North Reston belonged to the Jackson family whose complete family history has been written. The links to this family are detailed elsewhere.
Albert may have been showing poor health about this time and in 1883 he became Vicar of North Somercotes, a few miles east of South Reston on the coast of Lincolnshire. He died in the city of Lincoln on 14th October 1885. His grave and that of his wife Ann are in the next parish of South Somercotes. His will left his estate to his wife Ann who survived until 11th February 1900.
During his lifetime he received a number of honours including an honorary doctorate from the University of the South (USA) in 1875. He was also made a Brother Chaplain of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in 1868. He wrote on a number of areas presumably of his own interest and some of these are recorded in Crockfords 1885. Those interests included "visitation of the sick", "gravestones and epitaphs", Chrsitian antiquities", and " the history of Wesleyanism". David Morris reports that his obituary states that he became an authority on the design of church vestments.
He was survived by his six children.
Albert had an interest in family genealogy and found a Wood coat of arms. However this does not appear to have any connection with this family and may be that of Wood of Lancaster as noted in the "The General Armory" The dissertation refers to a Thomas Wood of Hackney and is dated 28th June 1634. This Thomas Wood had traced his ancestors through a Henry Wood to Thomas Wood of Burnley to Barney Wood and then to another Thomas Wood all of Burnley with the latter being a descendant of le Seigneur de Boys, Dauphin in France. This may well be the origin of the myth as stated earlier that our family is descended from French Hugenots. As we can trace our direct line to Chartham in Kent to around the same date as this was produced there is no evidence to back up any claim that we belong to the same line. There is however strong evidence that our descent to French Hugenots through Francoise (Frances) Thorel who married Thomas Wood in 1784.

He was there until his father moved to South Reston in 1874 where his father was the Rector of St Edith the small church adjacent to the home of the local land owner Howard Jackson. It is here that we find the closer relationship between the family of Albert and the Jackson's (mentioned in the notes related to Albert) in that the youngest child of Howard Jackson was Susan Rose Jackson, born in 1865 whom Francis married on the 18th June 1891.
Francis was intended for the clergy and was a student at Cuddeston Theological College when his father died in 1885. This required him to leave college before being ordained. He found work with The Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen which later became the Royal National Mission. he remained with this organisation until 1922 having been appointed its Secretary many years earlier.
The Superintendant of the Mission was Wilfred Grenfell (later Sir Wilfred, an energetic and charismatic man whose biography was written by J Lennox Kerr and published by the Ryerson Press, Toronto in 1959. In spite of all his positive attributes Grenfell was extremely disorganised with the business affairs of the Mission and this was to cause difficulties between Francis and his superior.
Francis undertook complex and difficult tasks on behalf of the Mission. On two occasions he was involved in the purchase of reindeer in Lappland and their transport to Labrador. once in 1907 for the Mission and again in 1921 for the Hudson Bay Company on secondment.
Francis had not forgotten his childhood friend Susan Rose Jackson and they married on 18th June 1891.
When he retired they lived for a while in Clevedon on the Somerset coast. In 1920 they built a thatched house called Little Picket in an old orchard in Cookham Dean, Berkshire. It is adjacent to the village church where Francis and Susan Rose are buried.
During his retirement Francis was busy with local affairs. he was a member of the Cookham Rural District Council, a Churchwarden, and a manager of the village Church of England School.

165. Dudley Pierre WOOD, son of Edgar Lancefield WOOD and Florence Annie FOXWELL, was born on 30 September 1906 in Dover Kent. He was baptised on 21 October 1906 in Hougham, Kent. He appeared in the census in 1911 in Dover Kent aged 4. He appeared in the census in 1921 in Dover Kent. Living with his Father and brother. Ernest TAYLOR was lodging with them.
His Mother was living in Marylebone and working as a needlewoman for Mrs HUNT a Dressmaker at 181 Wardour Street. Between 4 February 1922 and 3 February 1934 Dudley was a Royal Air Force - Aero Engine Fitter in RAF Halton No 2 Sqn. 20 Apr 1927 Embarked for Shanghai with No 2 Sqdn. 6 Sep 1927 Embarked for the UK. Dudley experienced Travel on 26 October 1927 in Shanghai, China. Returned to London on SS NOVARA with other RAF personnel after a tour of duty in China returning to RAF Manston, Kent. Between 23 April 1934 and 13 June 1935 Dudley was a Male Nurse in Northampton, Northamptonshire. Between 14 June 1935 and 13 June 1950 he was a Royal Air Force - Aero Engine Fitter in Hednesford, Cosford and Halton. Was posted from MAEE Felixstowe to Helensburgh 14 Oct 1939 and then to Hednesford on 10 Nov 1939. Dudley married Dorothy BONE on 17 May 1936 in Kensington, London. In 1938 he lived in Felixstowe Suffolk. He appeared in the census on 29 September 1939 in Felixstowe, Suffolk. Corporal Aero Engine Fitter. living with his wife Dorothy, two children (closed records) and his sister in law Lucy. One other closed record included. Between 1950 and 1968 Dudley was a Human Resources Manager in NGTE Pyestock, AWRE Shoeburyness and AWRE Aldermaston. He died of Carcinoma of rectum on 27 August 1968 in Pamber Heath, Hampshire aged 61.

Dudley joined the Royal Air Force at the age of 16 on 4th February 1922, as an apprentice. He served his apprenticeship at the No 1 School of Technical Training at RAF Halton from 4 Feb 1922 to 17 Aug 1925.. Soon after joining he was admitted to Princess Mary Hospital Halton on the 25th February. He was discharged on the 22nd March before being readmitted on the 16th May for 3 days. There is no record of why he was admitted to hospital. He joined No 2 Sqdn in September 1925 after completion of his apprenticeship as an Aero Engine Fitter. No 2 Sqdn flying Bristol F2Bs, was posted to Shanghai to reinforce RAF China Command on the 30th May 1927 but following the easing of tension Royal Air Force China Command was disbanded and the squadron departed for the UK in August of the same year. Dudley's service record indicates that he embarked for China on the 20th April 1927 and arrived in Shanghai on the 31st May. He then embarked at Shanghai for the retuirn trip on the 6th September 1927 on the SS Novara with 16 other members of the squadron arriving back in the UK on the 26th October. He remained with the squadron until he was posted to H.A.D Henlow on the 13th March 1929. He completed his service on the 3rd February 1934. However he rejoined the service on 14th June 1935. During his time away he was employed as a Male Nurse at St Andrews Hospital, Northampton. St Andrews was and maybe still is a private psychiatric hospital and I believe his duties were mainly to escort patients on outings and also to play in the cricket team which was maintained at the Hospital. He played cricket and hockey throughout his career in the RAF representing his unit and the Service. I have always understood that had he not been "forced " to join the RAF he would have become a full time professional cricketer but was frustrated by family circumstances.
On his return to the service he was posted to MAEE (Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment) Felixstowe (14 June 1935) where he worked on the flying boat squadron.Whilst there Sir Frank Whittle was also posted there to test float planes. This was at the time that Whittle met up with Rolf Dudley-Williams and they worked on the development of the first jet engine. On 14th October 1939 he was posted to MAEE Helensburgh and then on 10th November 1939 he was posted to RAF Hednesford, Instrument Section. He then served the remainder of his service until his discharge on 13th June 1950 at either No2 S of TT at RAF Cosford or No1 S of TT at RAF Halton. On his retirement after some 28 years of service he received a pension of One Pound Twelve Shillings and Sevenpence Halfpenney per week. In civilian life he worked as a Labour Manager (human resources as we now know it) first at NGTE Pyestock Hampshire and then with AWRE at Foulness and Aldermaston until his medical retirement and death in 1968.

170. Eric Albert Howard WOOD, son of Francis Harold Conrad Stanley WOOD and Susan Rose Stanley JACKSON, was born on 24 June 1895 in South Mortlake, Surrey. He appeared in the census in 1901 in Mortlake, Surrey. He appeared in the census in 1911 in Mortlake aged 15. He experienced Travel on 15 September 1921 in Montana, USA. Travelled on SS Scandinavia from Southampton arriving Quebec, Canada on 24th September bound for Montana, USA. returned to Southampton on SS Melita arriving 7 Nov 1924. Sailed on SS Montcalm with wife and daughter Pamela from fathers home - West Pentire, Clevedon; Somerset arriving Quebec as above to stay with friend Mr P BUTLER. Eric died on 5 February 1971 in Victoria B.C., Canada.

Robert Darlington reports that Eric had a great fascination with things mechanical. His brother had trained in medicine and perhaps he disappointed the family by not engaging in a field that was more genteel.
At the age of 11 he was also sent to the boarding school called Mostyn House in Cheshire which was run by the brother of Sir Wilfred Grenfell. At the age of 14 he transferred to The City of London Boys School on the Thames Embankment. Later his training at an engineering company was ended when World War 1 broke out. Eric could have stayed with this reserved occupation but early in 1915 he joined tthe Royal Army Service Corps as a dispatch driver and ammunition truck driver, for the remainder of the war.
The sapphire mine in Montana had done well for a period during the war but by 1919 it was faltering and the family were not successful in selling it. Eric was offered the job of supervising its machinery and he spent four years doing that. The link between Eric and the Sapphire mine was through his wife's sister Mary Louise Howard JACKSON who married Edward Augustus Keller in 1877. His father was a jeweller and had invested in the mine. Information on the mine can be found at www.gemgallery.com/#yogo_sapphire_history and www.russellcountry.com/Yogo_sapphires.html but no mention of Eric or Keller can be found. When he decided to return to England he took passage on SS MELITA where he met Lilian Mary Sharps. They soon became engaged.
Eric set up a taxi business in Clevedon in Somerset and that is where they married on 24 July 1925. Lilians family had gone to Vancouver Island and she had lived with them for a period after the war. Business in Clevedon was not so good so Lilian convinced Eric to emigrate. Their first daughter Pamela Angell Wood was born in Clevedon and in 1929 they moved to Victoria.
Eric worked in a number of jobs through the Depression but principally with the bus company where he was a machinist. They purchased some land and a modest home off Carey Road. When World War II broke out Eric's skills as a machinist gained him an NCO position in the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps. He worked at Signal Hill supervising the work on coast defence guns and other military equipment. By war's end he was a Warrant Officer and was awarded the British Empire Medal (MBE) for his services.
HM Dockyard was aware of his skills and they took him on to maintain and repair the gyroscopes in naval torpedoes. He then returned to Vancouver Island Coach Lines.
When he retired his love of machinery continued. He had a workshop in his back yard which was complete with a metal lathe and other equipment allowing him to construct model trains of exacting standards. In company with another "steam buff" who designed, and Eric built, working steam engines for small boats. Eric would take orders only from those with a true love of steam propulsion and at least one of his engines still appears at Victoria's annual classic boat show.
It was in lifting one of these engines that strained his heart and he died in 1973?
Eric and Babs had two daughters. Pamela Angell was born in Clevedon just before they emigrated. Pam married a widower Bruce Milburn and became mother to his two sons. A third son Kim was born after they married.
The second daughter, Wendy Howard was born in 1931 in Victoria and married Robert Darlington on the 5th April 1952.

Eric applied for admission as a Freeman of the City of London having recently served as a Private in the RASC in accordance with an Order of the Court of Common Council dated 20th May 1915. he was living at 30 Perryn Road Acton W3 the home of his Father at the time.

Lilian Mary SHARPS, daughter of Thomas Percy SHARPS (1869-1930) and Florence TINSLEY (1859-1911), was born on 31 December 1905 in Brightwalton, Berkshire. She appeared in the census in 1911 in Cricklewood, London. Residing with Uncle and Aunt - Richard and Cecily SHARPS. Lilian died on 3 August 1973 in Victoria B.C..
